Amherst was established in 1764, 1.25 km (2 mi.) west from its current location. Amherst's original settlers were New England settlers, invited to settle along the Bay of Fundy and the various little towns inhabited there. A grist mill and tannery were built .6 km (1 mi.) east of the settlement, which in turn, altered the entire look, shape and location of the city. By 1880, a railway was built in Amherst which changed how Amherst did business. Companies used the railway station as a focal point for commercial advancements and development.

By 1908, Amherst was at the top of the manufacturing chain, leading over any other centre in the Maritimes, and was aptly titled "Busy Amherst." During the boom in Amherst, architecture would remain as the anchor point of the era, providing newer generations insights into classic architecture. Most of the older buildings in Amherst are built locally, with home-grown pride.

Amherst is a mural town today, home to many, including a sports mural 167 sq. m (1800 sq ft.) in size. Amherst is situated proudly amongst many glorious beaches, all with the warmest waters north of the Carolinas. Architecturally sound churches reside in Amherst, as well as children's parks, bird sanctuaries, shopping centers and golf courses. Rich is history, Amherst offers museums and historical homes, as well as guided tours.
