Elmsdale is situated on the boundary of Hants County and Halifax County. Elmsdale is split in two by the Shubenacadie River, with each half belonging to a separate county. Elmsdale initially bloomed after the construction of the Shubenacadie Canal and the Nova Scotia Railway. William Read, back in 1785 was one of the first settlers to Elmsdale, after he was granted 200 acres of land. 1852 brought to Elmsdale the first house, after which many were built. As well, the Presbyterian Church in Elmsdale was built in 1862. In the 1800s, Rev. John Cameron once built a large residence in Elmsdale that still stands to this day on a slope above the village.

Conveniently close to the International Airport, Elmsdale resides just 44.3 km (27.5 mi.) north of Halifax.
