A part of Kings County, Harbourville is a peaceful community located on the southern shores of the Minas Basin. It's believed Harbourville was first settled in 1829. Harbourville has previously been known as both "Shingle Log Brook" and "Givans Wharf." The more conventional title of Harbourville was given to the village in 1860, which is a descriptive title. Ten years later in 1870, Harbourville would weather a severe fire that destroyed a large portion of the community.

Before fishing was the main industry in Harbourville, the harbour here was frequently used to ship out materials such as wood and vegetables. The popular, bustling community of Digby is situated 119 km (73.9 mi.) southwest of Harbourville, traveling on Highway 101 parallel to the scenic shoreline.
