Lower Five Islands is situated along the northern shores of the Minas Basin, as a member of Colchester County. In 1748, Lower Five Islands was inhabited by a few French settlers, but they would not stay in the area. Lower Five Islands was first granted to Benjamin Gerrish in 1767, but was not a permanent settlement until 1788, when William Corbett arrived. From there, many churches were erected, including a Presbyterian church, a Baptist church, a Methodist church and the United church. Main industries in Lower Five Islands are fishing, agriculture and forestry. Lower Five Islands is 76.8 km (47.7 mi.) west of Truro.

Lower Five Islands is home to the Five Islands Provincial Park, which exhibits hiking trails, some of the world's highest tides, a beach fit for exploring, kayaking, picnicking and giant coastal cliffs which offer panoramic views of the Bay of Fundy.
