Maitland Bridge is located in Annapolis County, in the mid-west region of Nova Scotia's mainland, serving as the gateway to the glorious Kejimkujik National Park on Highway 8 (Kejimkujik Scenic Drive). Maitland Bridge was once known as Kempton, but that name was changed to honour Sir Peregrine Maitland. The first settlers to Maitland came in the early 1800s. The Maitland Bridge economy is primarily reliant on the lumber industry. Nova Scotia's capital city, Halifax, is 167 km (103.8 mi.) east of Maitland Bridge.

Maitland Bridge is home to the Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site of Canada, a major source of tourism for Maitland Bridge. The park boasts numerous rivers and lakes, and is recognized as an ideal place to canoe or kayak. Many hiking trails, lots of wildlife and various plant life exists in the national park, as well. The park also features an information centre and walking tours. As well, Maitland Bridge offers many outdoor activities including swimming, bicycling and cross-country skiing in winter months.
