Originally, Porter's Lake was known as Amagunchech, which stood for "the little breezy place." Porter's Lake is situated in Halifax County, along the popular and pretty 24 km (14.9 mi.) long Porter's Lake. Now Porter's Lake is named for William Porter, a settler who arrived with others to the area in 1784. Porter would go on the construct the first mill in Porter's Lake, which was a saw mill. In fact, including the first mill, Porter's Lake was predominantly a lumber town, as well as a farming community. Today, however, Porter's Lake is mostly a retreat for people working in Dartmouth and Halifax. Porter's Lake is a total of 30.1 km (20 mi.) east of Halifax.

Porter's Lake boasts the Porter's Lake Provincial Park, which is close to Halifax, yet still a quiet, relaxing place to spend the day. The waters at the Porter's Lake Provincial Park are excellent for swimming, as well as waterskiing, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. The park also includes lush green picnic areas, a boat launch, a sandy beach and trails made for walking and biking. Porter's Lake is a convenient stop worth the visit.
