The name, Shubenacadie, comes from the Micmac language, and is believed to mean "place where the red potato grows." At one time, Shubenacadie was home to the only Canadian residential school in the Atlantic, which was meant to transition First Nations individuals into a non-native culture. The historic Shubenacadie River is world-renowned for its high tides, reaching 56 ft. (17.1 m).

Shubenacadie is home to the Greenwing Facility, a Ducks Unlimited wetlands interpretation centre, as well as the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park. Shubenacadie River also provides water rafters and wave watchers with loads of entertainment. Shubenacadie is a thriving animal refuge for native North American animals, consisting of black bears, deer, moose, wolves, Sable Island Ponies and more. The Tin Smith museum in Shubenacadie also provides visitors with a chance to absorb some local history. In all, Shubenacadie has a vast spectrum of activities for all types of people.  Shubenacadie is located just 59.8 km (37.2 mi.) from Halifax.
