Toney River is a small, hospitable community, situated in the beautiful County of Pictou, on the shores of a river of the same name and the Northumberland Strait. Toney River is also positioned on the scenic Sunrise Trail, which hugs the coastline. Toney River was founded at the beginning of the 19th century. The town name is said to commemorate Captain Toney, a French settler who came to the land and immediately adopted the Mi'kmaq way of living, fitting in well enough with the local tribe to be considered a chief. Saw mills were quickly constructed after settlement, but today the main industries are fishing and agriculture. Toney River is just 18.6 km (11.6 mi.) northwest of Pictou.

Toney River has a busy wharf, numerous fishing boats and of course, the dock is a great place to watch the sunset. The Waterside Beach Provincial Park consists of a long, pristine sandy beach, picnic areas, warm water meant for swimming and various amounts of land just waiting to be discovered. A sheep farm is located just minutes away, which is an ideal place to take the whole family. Pictou County offers many great attractions, such as golf courses, yacht clubs, numerous parks and so much more.

Toney River accommodations include bed and breakfasts.
