The name, Whycocomagh, derives from the Mi'kmaq, and means "beside the sea." Despite its meaning, Whycocomagh is actually located in the central region of Cape Breton Island, near the Bras d'Or Lake on the shores of the St. Patrick Channel. First settlers were of Scottish and English origin, and came to the area of Whycocomagh in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its current population is below one thousand.

There isn't one particular industry that Whycocomagh is known for, but this small community is scenic and picturesque. Alexander Graham Bell once claimed that "Whycocomagh is the Rio de Janeiro of North America." Of course, he was referring to its attractive, vivid landscape. Whycocomagh also presents visitors with wonderful parks and gardens, as well as two sandy beaches, hiking and mountain biking trails, a provincial park and canoe routes. Whycocomagh is located just 121 km (75.2 mi.) from Sydney.

Whycocomagh accommodations include hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts.
