Liverpool is located in the Region of Queens Municipality, along the Atlantic coast on Nova Scotia's South Shore. Once a seasonal camp for the Mi'kmaq, Liverpool was called Ogukegeok, which means "place of departure." Liverpool was founded in 1759 by New England Planters, following the expulsion of the Acadians. Loyalists would continue to populate Liverpool into the 1800s, strengthening its economic stance.

Liverpool, in the 1800s, was a major seaport, shipbuilding centre and exporter of timber, and for a time, Liverpool was second to Halifax in the export business. Between WWI and WWII, Liverpool relied on rum-running, pulp and paper mills and repairing corvettes and minesweepers.

Liverpool offers the Fort Point Lighthouse Park, the Hank Snow Country Music Centre, Liverpool historical walking tours, the Milton Blacksmith Shop Museum, the Perkins House Museum, the Queens County Museum, the Sherman Hines Museum of Photography and Art Galleries, the Old Burial Ground, the Thomas Raddall Genealogy Research Centre and maritime scenery.

Liverpool accommodations include inns, bed and breakfasts and hotels.
