Merigomish is a member of beautiful Pictou County, located on the southern side of the Merigomish Harbour. It is believed that the name, Merigomish, derives from the Mi'kmaq name, Malegomish, which means "the merrymaking place." Loyalists flocked to Merigomish about 1784. During the 1800s, numerous churches were constructed in Merigomish, as well as the first post office in 1843. Main industries in Merigomish are fishing and farming. Merigomish is located a total of 176 km (109.4 mi.) northeast of Halifax.

While visiting Merigomish, such activities include kayaking at Merigomish Harbour, and hiking or fishing. Nearby is Melmerby Beach, a breath-taking beach of white sand, swimmable waters and endless beauty. Merigomish is situated along Highway 245, a beautiful stretch of road that follows the northern shores. The Big Cove YMCA Camp, located at Merigomish Harbour, is the oldest residential camp in Canada, and promises to be "an experience that lasts a lifetime."
