Fall River is located centrally on Nova Scotia's mainland, just north of Dartmouth in Halifax County along Highway 2. The town name is derived from a stream that runs all the way from Miller Lake to Lake Thomas. A waterfall on the stream was destroyed in the 1950s to make way for a major highway that leads to Halifax. The land at Fall River was granted to a group of settlers, mostly of German origin, in the last quarter of the 18th century. It is believed that the Mi'kmaq were the original inhabitants of Fall River. In recent years, Fall River has endured a vast amount of economic growth, especially commercial businesses. Fall River is a driving distance of 23.4 km (14.5 mi.) north of Halifax.

Fall River is next to the Ashburn Golf Club, which consists of two championship courses, one of which was rated in Canada's top ten in 1989.
