Freeport is located on the western edge of Long Island, and includes a ferry that leads to Westport of Brier Island. Freeport is one of the western most towns in all Nova Scotia and is a member of Digby County. Freeport was founded in 1784 by Loyalists. Freeport has been known as Lower Cove and Long Island in the past, and received its current name in 1865. Freeport is small in stature, and at one time, was a shipbuilding community. Today, however, Freeport is predominantly a fishing community. Freeport is positioned 58.9 km (36.6 mi.) southwest of the popular tourist town of Digby.

Freeport is known for its pristine views of the Bay of Fundy, and exhibits sandy beaches, hiking trails, fine dining and gift shops. As well, visitors to Freeport can enjoy the wonderful wildlife, whether it's watching the whales or the large seabirds.
