Great Village, located beside Cobequid Bay on the Glooscap Trail, belongs to Colchester County. First settlers to Great Village were the French Acadians in 1630. They would end up building dykes in Great Village for purposes of increasing the farmland, but then they were expelled by Governor Lawrence in 1755. It was then in 1762, that Protestants of mostly Ulster origin came to the land. Great Village was a thriving shipbuilding centre in the 1800s.

Great Village consists of prosperous trees, historical houses and tranquil scenery. Go fishing, hiking or pick strawberry and blueberries. In winter months, enjoy outdoor ice skating. The Great Village dykes today are a Heritage Engineering site that any visitor to Great Village must see. The dykes are still unspoiled after many years of wear and tear. Great Village is located a 33.8 km (20.9 mi.) to the west of Truro.

Great Village accommodations include bed and breakfasts.
