Hammonds Plains is situated in the Halifax Regional Municipality, by the Chebucto Peninsula along a stretch of road that travels from Bedford to St. Margarets Bay. In the 1800s, Hammonds Plains was a place where Black Refugees settled, having been granted poor-quality lots and left to fend for themselves. Hammonds Plains experienced an increase in population in the 1990s, especially subdivisions at the west end of Hammonds Plains Road. Hammonds Plains in located just 26.6 km (16.5 mi.) west of Halifax, as many citizens commute to Halifax for work.
