Summerville Centre was first settled in 1784 by Captain John Grant. Captain John Grant was a United Empire Loyalist who migrated from Strathspray, Scotland; he died in 1792. It's believed that before Grant arrived in Summerville Centre, Acadians occupied some of the land. Grant's great grand son, Michael Bergen Grant sold the land to two men, Daniel Hobart and Edward Dimock. Summerville Centre was previously known as Black Rock.

Shipbuilding was a major part of Summerville Centre's industry in the mid 1800s. Summerville Centre also acted as a terminus for many ferries in the area, and the earliest ferries were actually row boats heading to Hautsport where a rail connection could be made.

Summerville Centre is home to a wonderful, scenic sandy beach, aptly titled Summerville Beach. Summerville Centre is also home to 'The Dunes,' spectacular coastal areas, clear water, marine life and colourful lighthouses, museums and intriguing, historical information. Summerville Centre is located 160 km (99.4 mi.) west of Halifax.

Summerville Centre accommodations include hotels and motels.
