Aylesford is located in Annapolis Valley, as a part of Kings County. It's believed that Aylesford was named after poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's tale of Evangeline, which is an Acadian tale. Aylesford is primarily a farming community, with the most important crop being the cranberry. Aylesford is nestled alongside the Evangeline Trail, a scenic route popular with tourists. Aylesford is northwest of Halifax by a total of 130 km (80.8 mi.).

Aylesford is a very proud home to the Oaklawn Farm Zoo, a petting zoo with numerous exotic animals ranging from lions, llamas, monkeys, deer and ponies, which can be ridden by children. The Berwick Heights Golf Course, an 18-hole, finely detailed course consisting of rolling hills and narrow fairways, is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon in Aylesford. While in Aylesford, learn to ride a horse at Cowboy Country, or take it to the trails and experience nature with an experienced guide at High Mountain Horse Ranch Trail Rides. When you get hungry, enjoy numerous variations of foods containing cranberries, the Aylesford fruit of choice, at Johnston's Cranberry Marsh.
