Cape Breton Island is northeast of Nova Scotia, across the Strait of Canso but joined by the Canso Causeway. Part of the economy is in transition from industrial to service-based, while other parts continue with fishing, forestry, agriculture, and tourism.

One of the world's most famous drives, the Cabot Trail offers beautiful vistas of mountains, plateaus, and coastal scenes overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Glace Bay's Miners' Museum tells the story of Cape Breton's historic leading industry. The Louisbourg Playhouse, based on London's 1599 Globe Theatre, offers live entertainment during summer. The Highland Village Museum overlooking the Bras d'Or Lakes brings Cape Breton's Scottish Gaelic culture alive. Experience Mi'kmaq culture and cuisine at Wagmatcook Culture and Heritage Centre.
