River John is located in Pictou County, on the mouth of the River John on the Northumberland Strait. Settled by Europeans in the 18th century, with plenty of timber in the area and a port, River John became a small shipbuilding community. Industry in River John today mostly consists of seasonal industries such as agriculture, tourism and fishing. In summer months, River John is a getaway for many Nova Scotians.

Famous Nova Scotia folklorist, W. Roy MacKenzie lived in River John until his death in 1957. While in River John, visit the Seafoam Woodturning Studio, where Derek Andrews creates a range of work, including unique sculptural pieces. Coastal Spirit Expeditions is a sea kayaking company, offering tours, multi-day tours and special package tours of the Northumberland Strait, Cape Breton Highlands and the Bay of Fundy.
