Big Pond, located on the southern side of the scenic Bras d'Or Lakes, is a part of Cape Breton County. Scottish settlers came to Big Pond in the early 1800s, via the Scottish Highlands. Evidence has led many locals to believe that Roderick MacNeil was the first settler to arrive in Big Pond; he received a land grant in 1809. Big Pond garners its name from a pond that rests alongside the local lakeshore, which happens to extend directly across two local landmarks. Big Pond is just 38.2 km (23.7 mi.) from Sydney.

Big Pond has dubbed its town "the heart of Cape Breton." Visitors can enjoy the Ben Eoin Provincial Park, which offers beautiful scenery of the East Bay, or Rita's Tea Room, owned by Canadian singer and star Rita MacNeil, which tributes her career via photographs, memorabilia and awards. Often times, Rita is present to visit with her guests. Big Pond is renowned for expectant Bald Eagle sightings, and is home to over one hundred different bird species. Dip in the lake, hike trails, take in the scenery and relax at Big Pond.

Big Pond accommodations include bed and breakfasts and cottages.
