Grand Etang, just north of the Margaree Harbour and south of the Cape Breton Highlands, means "big pond." Grand Etang is located in Inverness County, approximately 156 km (96.9 mi.) northwest of Sydney. Grand Etang was born off of various land grants in the early 1800s, and in 1871, Grand Etang opened its first post office. In the 1870s, Grand Etang was prospering with a lobster factory, two forges, a fishing station and grist mills. Today, Grand Etang is a quiet little town, as fishing is its main industry.

Visitors to Grand Etang can see the alluring Cape Breton Highlands from within town limits, and follow the beautiful Cabot Trail north past Cheticamp into the glorious highlands. Various activities in and around Grand Etang include golfing, whale watching, hiking trails, bird watching and strolling the coastline on sandy beaches.
