Hackett's Cove is situated in Halifax County, overlooking St. Margaret's Bay and near Peggy's Cove. It is speculated that Hackett's Cove was titled after a settler named Haggett, but proof of this claim cannot be found. Original settlers to Hackett's Cove were of Scottish descent, including the Loyalist MacDonald family. Hugh MacDonald battled for the British in the American Revolution, and was rewarded with a chunk of land in the St. Margaret's Bay region. Today, a headstone, said to be the oldest in the St. Margaret's Bay area, stands where Hugh buried is mother, Jeanette.

Hackett's Bay area offers kayak rentals, swimming, whale watching, diving and snorkelling as well as fishing charters. Museums, art galleries and historic sites and parks are also offered in or near Hackett's Cove. Visitors can hike trails, bird watch, and relax around the beach. Nearby is Peggy's Cove, SS Atlantic Memorial Park, Mahone Bay and the Lighthouse driving route. Halifax is just 44.7 km (27.8 mi.) away.

Hackett's Bay accommodations include bed and breakfasts.
