New Harris is a small community located within the county of Victoria, on the north western shores of the Bras d'Or Strait. Before the area became known as New Harris, which is a tribute to a place of the same name in Scotland, the settlement was known as Slois A Bhrochan, which is Gaelic and translate roughly to "gruel countryside." New Harris is predominantly a Gaelic community. Also, New Harris is just 48.8 km (30.3 mi.) northwest of
Sydney,
Cape Breton Island.
New Harris is conveniently positioned beside the scenic Bras d'Or Strait, just minutes from both
Baddeck and
Sydney, and an unforgettable drive up the glorious Cabot Drive to the equally glorious Cape Breton Highlands National Park. New Harris is an ideal place to go for a swim in the strait, go kayaking, canoeing or boating, go fishing, eat great local seafood, watch the whales, golf the pristine nearby golf courses and enjoy all the spectacular scenery.
New Harris accommodations include campgrounds.
