Pictou is the former Shire town of Pictou County. Its slogan is "The Birthplace of New Scotland," for the quintessential fact that during Pictou's population growth in the 1700s and 1800s, most immigrants were of Scottish descent. During the latter half of the 1800s, Pictou's industry became prosperous, with additions such as the Intercolonial Railway and a shipbuilding sector, as coal was on the up-rise at the time. Highway 106 opened in the 1970s, providing Pictou with a satisfying alternative for travel.

Pictou exhibits a spectacular waterfront harbour. Pictou's waterfront focal point is a replica ship: Hector, a ship rich in history and devastation. Visitors can enjoy walking on the newly re-vamped dock, which connects to the Trans-Canada Trail. The Hector Festival is an annual celebration of the arrival of Pictou's Scottish settlers, can is enjoyable for all ages. Water taxis and boats give tours of the harbour, and connect to New Glasgow. Pictou offers sometimes two to three festivals each week during summer months and is a soothing escape for anyone interested in pretty sights and enjoyable activities.

Pictou accommodations include bed and breakfasts, inns, motels, lodges and camping. Pictou is located just 166 km (103 mi.) northeast of Halifax.
