River Bourgeois is part of Richmond County, on the southern shores of beautiful Cape Breton Island. Once named by the Mi'kmaq, River Bourgeois was known to them as Nabigwonchek. River Bourgeois was initially founded because of high percentages of clay in the area, which was used for the development of the Louisburg Fortress. A postal way office opened for business in 1838 and the first school was erected eight years later. River Bourgeois was once a thriving fishing community, but today is more so know for its calm, peaceful nature. River Bourgeois is positioned 93.4 km (58 mi.) southwest of Sydney.

River Bourgeois is home to various activities such as swimming in the ocean, hiking and biking picturesque trails, canoeing and kayaking, nearby golfing and sight-seeing. As well, the River Bourgeois Annual Festival is always loads of fun, and features many activities for children, heritage walks, live music, canoe races, dances, a lob ball tournament and a pot luck supper. River Bourgeois also exhibits nearby beaches and all kinds of pretty scenery.
