Lunenburg ... a visual feast
Lunenburg is a combination of historical interest and beautiful scenery.
Lunenburg is a historical seaside town, founded in 1753 by a group of German, French and Swiss settlers. Lunenburg garners its name from George August of Hanover, King of Great Britain and Ireland who happened to also rule Brunswick-Lunenburg. In 1995 Lunenburg was officially regarded as a World Heritage Site, which prevents Lunenburg's historical monuments, architecture and design from deconstruction. Lunenburg's history stems from the War of 1812 (a.k.a. the French and Indian wars), in which Lunenburg forts were constructed to defend against enemy ships.
A once prominent and thriving industrial port, Lunenburg was and is known for its shipbuilding, fishing and grid plan, which is unique in both its design and formula. Lunenburg, to this day, is a thriving fishing industry, home to Canada's biggest fish-processing factory.
With a shoreline as beautiful and original as Lunenburg's, full of breathtaking architecture and history, Lunenburg is an oasis by the sea. Lunenburg is also the home of Canada's own Bluenose II, a replica built in 1963 of the famous racing ship locally designed and built in 1921, which can be found on the Canadian dime. This ship, as well as the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, the Fisherman's Memorial and Tribute, Heritage sites and overall scenic beauty, makes Lunenburg a thriving tourist spot.
Situated 92 km (57 mi.) southwest of Halifax, Lunenburg offers an abundant amount of bed and breakfasts, cottages, inns and motels.
