Nictaux is positioned along the Nictaux River and is a member of Annapolis County. The Mi'kmaq once called the land Niktak, which means "the forks of a river." Nictaux was first settled in the early 1800s, as the first church was constructed in Nictaux in 1809, later to be used as a school. Nictaux lost numerous churches and schools to fires in the 19th century. Back then, the town was a busy working community, known for shipbuilding, mining and agriculture.
