Inverness

Inverness is said to be the hub of Western Cape Breton.  Although it is a very small town, there is much to see and do in the area and it is a main stop along the Cabot Trail.

Like so many other towns on the island, the town’s main attraction is its long, sandy beach.  Inverness Beach can be reached from a number of the side roads that branch off from the main one.  The beach has a small take-out, a boardwalk and waters suitable for swimming during the summer months.

The main street in the town is home to a number of restaurants and shops including the long-standing Tommy Cat Bistro where one can grab a delicious home-style lunch or a coffee for the road.  A museum dedicated to the coal mining industry that once thrived in the town is also located in the downtown area.

There are a number of places to stay in Inverness no matter what your budget or style.  Camping is available at MacLeods Campground near the edge of town and quaint and cozy cabins are available at the far end of Inverness Beach at Inverness Beach Village.  This end of the beach is more remote and sees less people so it’s like having your own private beach right outside your bedroom.  Golfers who travel to Cape Breton to play a round on the world-renowned courses around the island can enjoy another great new course at the edge of town.
